Lilly Daché was born in France in 1898. She moved to America in 1924. In the 1930s she was the leading milliner in New York; she was known for having a gold salon for clients who were brunette and a silver salon for blondes. At that time a hat by Lilly Daché could cost over $150. Among her clients were Loretta Young, Marlene Dietrich, and Carol Lombard. She was famous for her turbans, snoods and massed-flower shapes. Halston worked for Daché before starting his own label. Lilly Daché retired in 1968 when her daughter took over the business. Photos and text copyright protected.
